I recently heard an interview where McCartney was talking about how his ying played so perfectly to Lennon's more pessimistic yang, specifically in terms of lyrical creativity but one can easily imagine a broader connotation.
Grohl's music will retain a very definite one-dimensional quality as long as that is not the case (ie. the missing yang).
