The report is that he recognized a suicide bomber wearing a vest, and when he was unable to stop the attack, he hugged the attacker, guaranteeing his own death, but undoubtedly saving the lives of others in the process.
As everyone knows, the word "hero" is tossed around far, far too often. In this case, it hardly seems sufficient to describe the individual and the act.
